Pre-Professional Experience:

    Student Teacher. 2nd/3rd grade classroom at Peabody Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois.

    Language Arts:

    • Taught daily reading lessons to 3 rd grade students using the Open Court reading program.
    • Worked individually with at-risk students on sight words and phonics.
    • Encouraged reading skills with daily silent reading time and read alouds.
    • Enhanced students’ communication skills through journal writing.
    • Developed students’ understanding of the writing process through narrative writing

    Mathematics:

    • Engaged students in critical thinking to solve addition, subtraction, and problems and use math concepts
    • Reinforced counting skills with second graders by practicing coin counting and using a 100 chart to skip count.
    • Developed skills in interpreting and creating graphs with third graders

    Social Studies:

    • Created a unit for Hispanic Heritage month introducing students to Hispanic literature and music
    • Guided students’ studies of maps and globes and how to use them.

    Practicum Teacher: 1st/2nd grade multiage classroom at Van Allen Elementary School, North Liberty, Iowa

    • led a small daily reading group
    • taught a lesson on the long "o" sound spelled "oa" and "ow" using phonics cards created specifically for the lesson
    • Individually assisted struggling readers and writers by working one-on-one
    • performed 3 miscue analyses of one student's reading, and collected writing samples to analyze writing.

    • introduced science unit investigating water and taught several lessons
    • taught Daily Oral Language (DOL)
    • read aloud to whole class each day one chapter from a chapter book.
